Beset by a string of troubles, the three major listed airline players Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet — ended yet another quarter with sizable losses. A reduction in fares weighed on realisations and revenues and resulted in continuing losses, even as airlines managed savings in fuel and operating costs.

Both Kingfisher Airlines and SpiceJet have reduced their losses for the quarter, compared with last year, while Jet Airways saw its net loss going up by about 5 per cent to Rs 406.69 crore in the September 2009 quarter. Impacted by the five days of strike in September, Jet Airways was faced with an estimated loss of Rs 100.8 crore. This includes the variable cost of cancellation.

A shift in favour of low-cost carriers was evident from SpiceJet registering a near 27 per cent year-on-year increase in income from operations, even as both Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways witnessed about 14 per cent and 25 per cent dip in their topline.

Revenues for Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines were impacted mainly by falling fares, which they attributed partially to the lean season. However, both kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways, faced with excess capacities have taken measures to trim their fleet size over the past six months. While Jet Airways reduced its seats availability by as much as 30 per cent including domestic and international, Kingfisher Airlines made its domestic operations leaner by about 18 per cent compared with last year. The cut back has not only helped both kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways save on the cost front, but also improved the load factor.

Jet Airways saw its passenger load factor domestic and international increase from 66.3 per cent for the quarter ended September 2008 to 77 per cent in the recently concluded period. Jet Airways domestic and international loads grew by 2.9 per cent and 14.6 per cent respectively in this period. Kingfisher Airlines registered a 1.8 percentage points growth in its load factor during this period.

Though the load factors have gone up, realisations per passenger were depressed by lower average ticket prices. While Kingfisher Airlines saw its average revenues per passenger fall by 28.7 per cent from September 2008 to September 2009 quarter, Jet Airways registered a 33.7 per cent decline.

Meanwhile, improving trends in domestic traffic continued to be visible in September 2009, with passenger traffic totalling 35.56 lakh, a growth of about 30 per cent from the same month last year. However, data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, continued to show a marginal 1 per cent growth in passengers carried by domestic airlines from January to September 2009.

To deal with the falling domestic tariffs, both Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways are expanding their international operations as they have offered better margins. Both Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways are also focussing more on the low-cost domestic operations in order to rationalise costs.

The September quarter saw operating costs for airlines dip substantially year on year, with fuel costs falling on lower oil prices compared to last year, rentals flat and cutbacks in employee expenses. Fuel costs generated the largest savings with Jet Airways seeing its fuel costs almost halve compared to last year while Kingfisher Airlines saw a 42 per cent reduction in fuel costs.

Apart from saving on fuel costs, both Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways also put in place other internal cost-saving measures. For example, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines have curbed their outgo on employees by 15 and 17 per cent respectively in the September quarter compared to last year, even as SpiceJet registered a 9 per cent increase in employee costs. Going forward, companies may once again face a challenge from fuel cost, which account for nearly 30 per cent of total expenditure. Fuel costs, while falling year on year have seen an 18 - 20 per cent increase from the June quarter.

With the holiday season setting in, a fair amount of excess capacities being contained and increasing focus on international operations in case of Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways, companies are optimistic about a growth in revenues in the forthcoming quarters. She was not the only one to be deserted by the kingfisher airline, a dozen others also had met the same fate. The Mumbai-bound kingfisher flight, which leaves the Capital at 10.30 am, had taken off at 9.20 am itself.

The stranded passengers fumed and demanded why they were not informed of the change in kingfisher flight schedule. They were told by the kingfisher staff that the timing had changed with effect from Sunday.

I had called up the kingfisher Airlines call centre at 8.30 am but was never informed of this change. kingfisher Airlines could have called the passengers or even sent SMSes but nothing of this sort was done said another passenger who had to take a detour.

Similarly, Kingfisher flight IT 029 will take off from Mumbai at 11:05 pm and arrive at Singapore at 7:05 am, local time. Vijay Mallya-promoted Kingfisher Airlines is understood to have come down heavily on non-performing employees, even as a large number of its pilots are leaving the Kingfisher airlines to join low-cost carrier Indigo and other rivals.

According to Kingfisher Airlines sources, the Kingfisher airlines had sacked about five maintenance engineers on the ground of performance four weeks ago. Besides, a lady maintenance engineer in Delhi was also given the pink slip today.

When contacted, a Kingfisher airlines spokesperson said as part of an ongoing performance review process, employees from all functions undergo routine performance appraisal exercise.

Those who consistently fail to meet minimum acceptable performance standards of the Kingfisher Airlines are offered three months window to look for alternate career options, Kingfisher Airlines said without specifying further details.

Sources also said Kingfisher Airlines has lost quite a significant number of its pilots to low-cost carrier Indigo, but the exact number could not be ascertained.

Too much is being read into the normal attrition rate, Kingfisher Airlines said without disclosing the number of pilots who have left the Kingfisher Airlines in the recent past.

Kingfisher Airlines currently has a debt of Rs 6,000 crore and is planning to raise about USD 175 million before March next year.

The Delhi High court has directed Kingfisher Airlines to return all components leased out to it by Lufthansa Technik India following a petition by the latter that the carrier was using them even after it breached an obligation to make timely payments.

A single member bench of Justice S N Dhingra directed Kingfisher Airlines to make an inventory of all components leased out to it by Lufthansa Technik while receiving technical support for its fleet.

An inventory of the home based components, those used in maintenance, overhaul and repair leased out by Lufthansa Technik to Kingfisher Airlines under the agreement in question be prepared, Justice Dhingra said while passing an interim order.

In its petition Lufthansa Technik said Kingfisher Airlines terminated the agreement on August 18.

Lufthansa Technik India also alleged that Kingfisher Airlines breached its obligation to make timely payment to it as per terms and agreement.

According to the company, Kingfisher Airlines has not paid dues of Rs 17.7 crore for the months of July, August and September this year despite enjoying technical support.

Kingfisher Airlines after preparation of the inventory shall hand over all those components, which are under the lease and are intended to hand over by it, the court added while appointing a retired judge to make inventory.

The court also issued notice to Kingfisher Airlines and directed it to file a reply over the allegations made by Lufthansa Technik, while ordering the carrier to bring all components to Bangalore and Mumbai.

The court has directed to list the matter on October 29 for next hearing.

Lufthansa Technik is the world’s leading provider for maintenance, repair and overhaul of airplanes, components and engines. It had entered into an agreement with Kingfisher Airlines in March 2005 for undertaking maintenance, repair and overhaul activities for ten years.

Kingfisher to start Kolkata-Bangkok flights from August 14

Kingfisher Airlines will launch direct flights between Kolkata and Bangkok from August 14, the fifth international destination on its network and the first to South East Asia.

The launch of this new route will be the first time that Kingfisher Airlines will be commencing operations from India to South East Asia, Kingfisher said in a statement today.

Kingfisher flights will leave Kolkata at 11:20 am and reach Bangkok at 3:15 pm local time. The return kingfisher flight will leave Bangkok at 4:30 pm and reach Kolkata at 5:45 pm.

Kingfisher flights between Kolkata and Bangkok will be operated using the A320 family of aircraft featuring Kingfisher Class, the premium economy service.,the statement said.

Kingfisher added that besides catering to entrepreneurs, traders and leisure traffic, the flights will offer emerging traffic segments like MICE -- meetings, incentives, conventions and expositions.

Kingfisher Airlines is planning to raise up to Rs 500 crore through issue of further share capital. Kingfisher officials indicate that this may be through a number of options including a follow-on public or rights issue.

Kingfisher airline which is laden with significant debt and losses, has been in discussions with private equity players for the past nearly 12 months and has been trying to raise Rs 1,200 crore through equity ever since kingfisher Airlines merged with Deccan Aviation. I do not like fighting with people. Life is too short to have bad relationships.

We fight for our space but we coordinate very well, Kingfisher's Mallya said in an interview with private TV channel. He also noted that both Kingfisher and Jet Airways are cooperating on ground handling and have also applied for code sharing on certain routes.

Late last year, both Kingfisher and Jet Airways announced that they would form an alliance which would help in reducing costs, among others.

Kingfisher Airlines Ltd plans to start is first flight to South-East Asia in August with the low-fare Kingfisher Red service to tap into the peak winter tourist traffic in the region after September.

The Kingfisher Red flight, which will not offer any business class seats, will fly daily between Kolkata and Bangkok starting 14 August on an Airbus SAS-made A320 aircraft, according to the carrier’s website.

It will be the airline’s fifth low-cost international service. The carrier recently launched a Kingfisher Red service between Bangalore and Dubai, and has daily flights from Bangalore and Chennai to Colombo as also from Kolkata to Dhaka.

Jet Air-Kingfisher pact finally takes off

After an eight-month delay, the alliance between the country’s two largest private carriers, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines, finally took off on July 1. To start with, both the airlines have started sharing infrastructure at the domestic airports that include Delhi and Mumbai, a senior Kingfisher Airlines official told.

Apart from infrastructure sharing at airports, the code sharing between the two airlines will start this month. The infrastructure and code sharing will reduce Kingfisher’s operational costs by 20 to 30 percent, added the official. According to an official at Jet Airways, code sharing on domestic and international flights will start soon, apart from joint fuel management and network rationalisation. E-mails and text messages sent to spokespersons of both companies remained unanswered.

Last October, Vijay Mallya and Naresh Goyal signed an agreement to significantly rationalise capacity and reduce costs at a time when prices of jetfuel had hit record highs. Landing and parking charges are high in India. Besides, jetfuel prices have moved upwards in the last two months. All this has forced Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways to look for ways to reduce costs, said an analyst with a domestic brokerage firm.

Both the airlines have a large debt component on their books, apart from having been in the red. Jet Airways’s debt is $3.1 billion and had a standalone net loss of Rs 402 crore for FY09. Kingfisher’s loss stood at Rs 626 crore in the third quarter of FY09 from Rs 423 crore for the same quarter of FY08. The airline business in India in terms of profitability faces an uphill task due to high charges that are paid out for operations, said Raajeev Batra, head of transport advisory services, KPMG.

Kingfisher Airlines today said it has deferred declaration of its financial results for the year ended March 31 2009 in the absence of requisite quorum.

The Chairman of the Audit Committee met with an accident and hence the quorum could not be completed the private airline said in a statement here.

The Kingfisher Board met as scheduled today in Mumbai. However, the consideration of the audited financial statements for the year ended March 31 2009 has been deferred since the Audit Committee meeting could not be held as the quorum requisite was not present,it said.

The Audit Committee Chairman who met with an unfortunate injury resulting in a fractured leg was also unable to attend the meet, the company said. The committee and board's meetings for consideration of the financial results would be held at the earliest possible opportunity it said.

Airlines look at possibility of fare hike

Exactly a fortnight after airlines hiked fuel surcharge by Rs 400, oil companies on Tuesday yet again raised ATF aviation turbine or jet fuel prices by 6 percent or about Rs 2,300 per kilolitre. Now airlines are evaluating whether they should hike fares again. What could save consumers from more shocks is the fact that the post summer holiday to festive season July-September quarter is the leanest travel season. Airlines are, in fact brining out special offers to stimulate demand in this lean season.

While Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines spokespersons said they are evaluating the impact of the latest hike, Air India ruled out any further hike at this moment. After the mid-June hike, fuel surcharge for domestic flights varies from Rs 1,499 to Rs 3,400. If airlines don't hike fares, say industry sources, one thing is certain they need to withdraw flights to reduce operating expenses.

Tuesday's hike is the fourth in two months. On June 15, the ATF prices were hiked by about Rs 3,949 per kilolitre. Following the latest hike, ATF prices in Delhi from Wednesday will be Rs 38,558 per kilolitre. In Mumbai, the rate will go up from Rs 37,367 per kl to Rs 39,789 per kl. International crude oil prices have firmed to a seven-month high of $73 per barrel on hopes of demand revival in US.

The post summer break to festive season roughly July-September quarter is a very low travel season. Most airlines are introducing special low fares for travel during this period to have some occupancy. So a hike at this moment looks unlikely. But if ATF regularly keeps getting costlier on firmer international crude prices, there'll be little choice but to pass the cost, said an airline CEO.

Since ATF accounts for almost half of airlines operating cost in India, the aviation industry is worried over how they would survive high costs and low passenger loads. The aviation ministry is demanding a declared goods status for ATF so that a uniform 4 percent sales tax is applied across the country, which in turn reduces the higher tax burden on airlines. Many states levy well over 30 percent sales tax on jet fuel.

New domestic terminal set for take-off on July 1

From July 1 flying in or out of Jaipur will never be the same again. The new state-of-the-art terminal at Jawahar Circle will be operational from then and it promises to offer a whole new experience to domestic fliers.

For starters the new terminal — built at a cost of Rs 100 crore — has much more space than the present one. Initially, five domestic airlines will operate from this terminal which has an existing capacity to handle 2,000 passengers a day. Spicejet, Go Air, Jet Airways, Kingfisher airlines and Indigo are the ones which will take off from here from July 1.

The new terminal, renamed as Terminal-2, has a handling capacity of 500 inbound and outbound passengers during peak hours. It covers a total area of 23,000 square metres. AAI will run this terminal which was built by Kolkata-based Simplex Infrastructure. The foundation stone for the new terminal was laid in December 2006. It was supposed to be completed in October 2008, but is late by about nine months.

Civil aviation minister Praful Patel inaugurated the terminal on February 25, 2009 but it was still not complete at that time.

International flights will continue operations from the existing terminal at Sanganer which has been renamed Terminal-1. Four international flights are operating form the terminal to Gulf countries.

For domestic fliers, parking will cease to be an issue as the new parking lot will have space for 250 cars.

And for those who reach the airport early, there will be a multi-cuisine restaurant on the second floor facing a lush green lawn. And those who are not in the mood to take the escalator up, can just lounge about in the comfortable sofas in the waiting area.

With security being a prime concern, the terminal has been equipped with all modern equipment including door-framed metal detectors. The X-ray machines will be able to detect even traces of psychotropic drugs.

It also promises no more delays and diversions during winter season as the runway will be upgraded from CAT-I to CAT-II which improves the visibility on the runway.

Ramki Sundaram resigns from Kingfisher Airlines

Ramki Sundaram, executive vice-president at Kingfisher Airlines Ltd and former chief executive officer of Deccan Aviation Ltd, has resigned.

He will return to London-based Investec Bank UK Ltd in July as global head for mergers and acquisitions and an adviser to its aviation business.

Sundaram confirmed the development but did not say why he quit.

Sundaram has been an investment banker in the aviation industry for at least a decade. He was instrumental in structuring aircraft sales and lease-back deals for Deccan Aviation, which ran Air Deccan, the country’s first low-fare airline, till it was acquired by and later merged with Kingfisher Airlines.

G.R. Gopinath, then managing director of Deccan Aviation, had brought Sundaram to India from London to take over as its chief financial officer in 2007. After the acquisition by Kingfisher Airlines, Sundaram was appointed chief executive of Deccan Aviation until the merger.

Kingfisher Airlines vice-president, operations, D.D. Gandhi, one of the carrier’s first employees, left the company earlier in June.

Gandhi had joined Kingfisher Airlines in 2005 after a year with Deccan Aviation to head the airline’s domestic and international expansion.

Airfares likely to rise by Rs 500-800 from April

There could be more bad news for air travellers. Domestic airlines may increase air fares by Rs 500-800 per ticket from April as the falling rupee against the dollar is denting their bottom line. Around 30 percent of an airline’s operational expenses are denominated in dollars.

M Thiagarajan, managing director of Paramount Airways, told ET, If the dollar continues to appreciate against the rupee, we could increase fares in April. He, however, did not specify the quantum of the increase. We have received feelers from airlines that they could increase domestic fares before the elections. The hike could be around Rs 500 a ticket for low-cost carriers and Rs 800 per ticket for full service airlines, said CEO of a leading Mumbai-based travel agent, who did not wish to be named.

An Air India official declined to comment. Officials of Jet Airways, SpiceJet and IndiGo were not available for comments. A Kingfisher Red spokesperson said the company did not intend to raise fares.

The rupee fell to a record low on Tuesday. It slipped by as much as 0.5 percent to an all-time low of 52.185 a dollar before closing at 51.985 in Mumbai. The rupee is the third-worst performer in the past 12 months among the 10 most-traded Asian currencies, with a 22percent loss.

South Korea’s won and Indonesia’s rupiah have declined more. Mark Martin, analyst of KPMG, told ET , There has to be some increase in fares as operating costs have increased manifold in the past two quarters. The on-going rupee depreciation has a direct impact on the balance sheet of an airline.

Kingfisher Red special fare of Rs 883 on Mumbai-Nashik route

Kingfisher Red Private air-carrier on Wednesday announced an all-inclusive special fare of Rs 883 on its Mumbai-Nashik flight.

Kingfisher Red offers all inclusive fares at Rs 883 for Mumbai-Nashik and Rs 885 for Nashik-Mumbai.

The passengers can avail the offer by booking their tickets in advance, the release said.

Kingfisher Airlines reports loss of Rs 626 cr in Q3 FY09

Private air carrier, Kingfisher Airlines, on Sunday said it has reported a net loss of Rs 626 crore during Q3 FY09 as against Rs 423 crore in the same quarter last year.

The increase in loss in the quarter was on account of initiation costs of international operations, Rs 174 crore and exchange rate impact of dollar denominated expenses, Rs 60 crore, the company said in a statement issued here.

Vijay Mallya-led Kingfisher Airlines also incurred losses due to interest expenses during Q3 FY09 which increased by Rs 103 crore as compared to the same quarter last year and on account of operating costs in the quarter which included provisionS for contigencies for return of aircraft worth Rs 30 crore.

Apart from getting leisure travellers back on flights, the move is expected to benefit slowdown-hit corporations that had substantially curtailed executives’ travel.

In the past six months, flight occupancies had dropped drastically - often, over 40 per cent.
